Part 5 – Multiple Choice Reading (6 questions)
Read the text and choose the correct answer (A, B, C or D).
A Greener Future?
In recent years, environmental issues have become a major
topic of discussion around the world. Governments, scientists and ordinary
citizens are all searching for ways to reduce pollution and slow climate
change. However, while many people support environmental protection in theory,
fewer are willing to make significant lifestyle changes.
One major problem is modern society’s dependence on cars.
Although public transport has improved in many cities, people often continue
driving because it is more convenient. Experts argue that unless governments
invest more heavily in reliable transport systems, pollution levels are
unlikely to fall.
Another challenge involves consumer habits. Large amounts of
waste are produced every day because people frequently buy products they do not
really need. Fast fashion, for example, encourages consumers to replace clothes
regularly instead of repairing them. As a result, enormous quantities of
textile waste end up in landfills.
Despite these problems, there are reasons to feel
optimistic. Renewable energy is becoming cheaper and more efficient, and
younger generations appear to be more environmentally aware than previous ones.
Schools now teach students about recycling, sustainability and climate change
from an early age.
Scientists believe that if governments, businesses and
individuals cooperate, significant progress can still be made. However, time is
running out, and immediate action is needed if future environmental damage is
to be avoided.
